REPUBLIKA.CO.ID,LONDON--Penyebab tenggelamnya kapal Titanic yang terjadi pada 1912 silam ternyata akibat kesalahan kemudi. Kapal pesiar terbesar dan termegah pada saat itu harusnya bisa diselamatkan andaikata sang kapten tidak nekad terus berlayar.

Pada 10 April 1912 RMS Titanic bertolak dari Southampton, Inggris menuju New York, namun pada pelayaran hari keempat kapal yang dibanggakan tak akan bisa tenggelam itu menabrak gunung es dan tenggelam sebelum kapal penyelamat tiba. Sekitar 1.500 penumpang tenggelam bersama kapal megah itu.

Adalah Louise Patten, seorang penulis dan cucu dari Charles Lightoller, pejabat nomor dua terpenting di kapal Titanic saat itu, yang mengungkap kejadian sebenarnya. Ia mengatakan kebenaran tentang apa yang terjadi hampir 100 tahun yang lalu telah disembunyikan karena takut menodai reputasi kakeknya, yang juga seorang pahlawan perang.

Lightoller, adalah perwira paling senior yang selamat dari kejadian itu. Namun ia menutupi kesalahan saat penyelidikan tenggelamnya kapal. Karena ia khawatir jika kecelakaan disebabkan kesalahan manusia, maka sang pemilik kapal akan bangkrut dan rekan-rekannya pun keluar dari pekerjaan.

"Padahal mereka dengan mudah bisa menghindari gunung es jika bukan karena perintah yang blunder," kata Patten seperti dikutip Daily Telegraph. Tenggelamnya kapal Titanic yang relatif cepat itu terjadi karena pimpinan mereka memaksa kapten untuk terus berlayar usai menabrak gunung es. "Bukannya kemudi diarahkan ke sebelah kiri gunung es, pemegang kemudi, Robert Hitchins, panik dan belok ke arah yang salah."

Patten menulis perubahan dari kapal layar tradisional menjadi kapal uap berarti ada dua sistem kemudi yang berbeda. Sistem yang satu berarti memutar roda ke satu arah dan sistem lainnya memutar ke arah yang berlawanan.

Setelah mereka sadar telah keliru, Patten menambahkan, mereka hanya memiliki empat menit untuk mengubah arah dan waktu. Perwira Pertama William Murdoch menyadari sang juru mudi salah, kemudian mencoba memperbaiki itu namun terlambat.

Kakek Patten pun ikut dalam rapat terakhir perwira kapal Titanic sebelum kapal itu tenggelam. Di sanalah jelas semua kesalahan fatal yang telah terjadi. Namun yang memperparah kondsii adalah, J. Bruce Ismay, pemilik White Star Line membujuk kapten untuk terus berlayar.

Keputusan inilah yang membuat kapal tenggelam berjam-jam lebih cepat daripada seharusnya. "Padahal kalau Titanic diam saja, ia akan bertahan paling tidak sampai kapal penyelamat datang dan tidak ada yang perlu mati," ungkap Patten. Selama ini diketahui penyebab tenggelamnya kapal mewah itu akibat menabrak gunung es yang merobek lambung kapal yang membuat kapal rusak parah.
